Navigational Rallying – events in September

Want to try something different this autumn? We’re running a series of beginner training events for anyone interested in navigational rallying.

12-car rallies are a form of motorsport which combines driving and navigational ability. Competitors participate in teams of two – a driver and navigator. The crew is given a set of clues/instructions, which they use to plot particular points on a map and decipher the route between these. This isn’t about speed – it’s about navigation skills, teamwork, and having fun while learning something new. The crew must then follow the correct route, looking out for codeboards along the way, and keeping to a set time schedule by arriving to certain locations at particular times.

Tabletop Rally and Navigational Training – Tuesday 9 September at the Claydon Greyhound, Ipswich

The evening will start at 7.30pm and be a sociable evening of clue solving and plotting in the pub – suitable for all abilities. This will form part of the training ahead of the beginner’s 12 car later in the month. No previous knowledge or experience is needed. Expert navigators will be on hand to teach you all you need to know about navigational rallying, maps, plotting and solving the clues.

Seasoned competitors are also welcome to join for a fun evening and use the event to prepare for the season ahead.

Please bring pens, pencils and a map roamer if you have one. We’ll provide the map! If you don’t have a map roamer, don’t worry – you can borrow one of ours.

Beginner’s 12 Car Rally – Friday 26 September, starting from White Colne

This is a navigational training exercise aimed solely at beginner navigators using road-going cars (your daily, unmodified driver is perfect). At this event, we will put your newly found skills into practice, driving around the Essex countryside at night, following a set route.

The event is open to anybody who has never done a navigational 12 car or road rally before, or who has competed as a beginner on fewer than three 12 car rallies. There are no restrictions on drivers’ experience.

The entry fee is £5 and will include use of a map roamer if you do not have one.

The event will start and finish at White Colne Village Hall near Colchester (Bures Road, White Colne, Colchester, CO6 2QA).

Crews are encouraged to attend our tabletop rally scheduled for Tuesday 9 September, in Ipswich, where training will be provided ahead of the beginner’s event. If you are unable to attend the tabletop rally, please do not let this put you off from entering – we can send you some training materials ahead of the event and experts will be in attendance on the 26th to support you.
