We are thrilled to announce that 2025 marks the 75th anniversary of Eastern Counties Motor Club. A milestone testament to the passion and dedication of our members.
Our story…
The club was founded in January 1950 at the Bull Hotel in Woodbridge. It all began with a group of enthusiastic individuals who shared a love for motoring and a desire to use their road cars for sport.
We started our motor racing at Fersfield near Diss, and were the first club to run a proper race meeting at Snetterton, back when it was just an airfield.

An excerpt from Eastern Counties Motor Club: Over Seven Decades Of Affordable Motor Sport – by Leigh Trevail
On January 23rd 1950: nineteen motor racing enthusiasts met in the Bull Hotel in Woodbridge, Suffolk with the idea of forming a club, the name they decided on was the East Anglian Motor Club. However the next day the East Anglian Daily Times carried a story of a similar group of enthusiasts in Halstead, Essex who had exactly the same idea, including the name! Hastily the Woodbridge contingent convened a special meeting and the name changed to Eastern Counties Motor Club.
The Officers and Committee consisted of:
- Chairman: C M S Abbott
- Vice-Chairman: L J Coe
- Secretaries: H F Murland, D W G Smith
- Treasurer: P W Thompson
- Remainder of Committee: J Wellens, J T Brown, Dr A Sherlock
- Other Founder Members: J Abbott, W Bloss, S J Digby, C Neville Horton, E Kinnell, W Last, P T Nash, R M Poole, R Sage, J Stonehouse, E Thompson
- Sir Charles Bunbury Bt accepted the post of president in May 1950.
The club subscription was one guinea per annum from the date of joining.
To these motor racing enthusiasts, we remain eternally grateful
